Jan Vorisek: The Space of Possible Outcomes

Die für Tableau Zurich und in Kooperation mit der Kunstsammlung Kanton Zürich entwickelte Arbeit basiert auf der Entfremdung einer 2D-Video-Game-Level-Design-Software und untersucht damit Formen modularer Bildproduktion im Kontext zeitgenössischer Bildkulturen. Ausgangspunkt ist ein privates Archiv aus Screenshots, Fotografien, gefundenem Bildmaterial, Zeichen, Icons und skizzenhaften Fragmenten, die zu einem visuellen Baukastensystem reorganisiert werden. Aus dieser Anordnung heraus werden Bilder gezeichnet, welche die Logik in eine neue Bildsprache übersetzen. Durch Wiederholung, Verschiebung, Überlagerung entstehen hybride Bildräume zwischen Architektur, Interface, abstrakter Kartografie und 32-Bit-Videospiel-Ästhetik.
Die Arbeiten operieren zwischen einer Mikro- und Makroebene: Einzelne Kacheln stehen für sich selbst und sind zusammengefügt zu Ornamenten, Zeichen, Raumstrukturen oder architektonischen Details. Bedeutung bleibt dabei bewusst instabil. Die Bilder folgen keiner kohärenten Bildsprache, sondern einem eklektischen Prinzip aus Brüchen, Wiederverwendung und semiotischem Spiel.
Insgesamt werden 14 Arbeiten im Grossformat auf Billboardwänden präsentiert. Durch die monumentale Skalierung verschiebt sich die ursprünglich digitale, modulare Struktur in den urbanen Raum und erzeugt eine Spannung zwischen öffentlicher Werbung, architektonischer Oberfläche und experimenteller Bildproduktion.
ENGLISH
The work, developed for Tableau Zurich in collaboration with the Art Collection of the Canton of Zurich, is based on the reappropriation of 2D video game level design software and thus explores forms of modular image production within the context of contemporary visual cultures. The starting point is a private archive of screenshots, photographs, found imagery, symbols, icons and sketch-like fragments, which are reorganised into a visual modular system. From this arrangement, images are created that translate the logic into a new visual language. Through repetition, displacement and superimposition, hybrid visual spaces emerge that lie between architecture, interface, abstract cartography and 32-bit video game aesthetics.
The works operate between micro and macro levels: individual tiles stand on their own and are assembled into ornaments, signs, spatial structures or architectural details. Meaning remains deliberately unstable. The images do not follow a coherent visual language, but rather an eclectic principle of fragmentation, reuse and semiotic play.
The 14 works in total are presented in large format on billboard walls. Through this monumental scale, the originally digital, modular structure shifts into the urban space, creating a tension between public advertising, architectural surfaces and experimental image production.

Das Werk von Jan Vorisek entwickelt sich kontinuierlich in Ausstellungen als Momentaufnahmen eines potenziell endlosen Produktionsprozesses, der sich in ortsspezifischen Interventionen, raumgreifenden Installationen und experimentellen Assemblagen aus Skulptur, Video, Text, gefundenen Objekten und Soundpieces artikuliert. Seine Praxis wird durch die Organisation von Club- und Experimentalmusik-Events erweitert, welche Resonanzräume für kollektive Erfahrungen schaffen und kritische Fragen zu subkulturellen Dynamiken stellen. Er ist DJ und Mitbegründer von House Of Mixed Emotions und HEADSHOP. Der Katalog Private Fiction (Lenz Press, 2025) dokumentiert Einzelausstellungen u. a. im Kunsthaus Glarus, Swiss Institute New York und Kunstmuseum Winterthur. 2024 wurde in Zürich eine 18 Meter hohe Skulptur (Freiläufer, 2024) realisiert, die sein Interesse an Raum und kollektiver Erfahrung unterstreicht.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Jan Vorisek’s work evolves continuously in exhibitions as snapshots of a potentially endless creative process, expressed through site-specific interventions, large-scale installations and experimental assemblages combining sculpture, video, text, found objects and sound pieces. His practice is extended through the organisation of club and experimental music events, which create resonant spaces for collective experiences and pose critical questions about subcultural dynamics. He is a DJ and co-founder of House Of Mixed Emotions and HEADSHOP. The catalogue Private Fiction (Lenz Press, 2025) documents solo exhibitions at venues including the Kunsthaus Glarus, the Swiss Institute New York and the Kunstmuseum Winterthur. In 2024, an 18-metre-high sculpture (Freiläufer, 2024) was realised in Zurich, underscoring his interest in space and collective experience.
TABLEAU ZURICH ist ein gemeinnütziger Ort für visuelle Kunst im öffentlichen Raum. Er befindet sich in unmittelbarer Nähe von Bellevue, Bahnhof Stadelhofen und Kunsthaus Zürich. Es werden pro Jahr zwei Ausstellungen gezeigt, welche 365 Tage im Jahr frei zugänglich sind.
TABLEAU ZURICH is a non-profit space for visual art in a public area. It is located in the immediate proximity of Bellevue, Stadelhofen train station and Kunsthaus Zurich. There will be two exhibitions per annum, which will be open to the public 365 days a year.
